Ingredients

  • 1 liter light corn syrup
  • 6 oz. or ½ can evaporated milk (2% fat)
  • Chocolate syrup
  • 2 oz. red food dye (FD 40)
  • 1 oz. yellow food dye
  • 8-10 drops green and/or blue food dye
  • White bowl
  • Whisk
  • Apron

Instructions

  1. Begin by whisking about 1 cup of corn syrup together with evaporated milk and about 1/3 cup of chocolate syrup. After the mixture is blended, add the remaining corn syrup and red food dye. There will need to be some color adjustments based on your preference and intended usage. Use the following tips to make the appropriate adjustments to your blood mixture.
  2. Red food dye tends to be a touch too blue for real blood. Add drops of yellow to neutralize the blue.
  3. Green will deepen the brown tones. Green food dye will quickly change the color, so add drop-wise and mix carefully.
  4. Chocolate syrup adds brown, and will increase opacity.
  5. If it looks too clear, add a couple tablespoons of evaporated milk until the right opacity.
  6. If it looks too brown/pink/orange, add more red.
  7. Adjust viscosity if too thick at the end with 1 tbsp to ¼ cup of water.
  8. A good quality check: run a spoonful down the inside of your forearm to your cupped hand. It should run in a stream down your arm and look more bright on your arm, but the pool in your cupped hand should look dark and opaque.
